The Statesman-Journal has named their all-region golf team for both boys and girls and West Salem swept both players of the year and both coaches of the year.

For the boys, Casey O'Sullivan was named the regional golfer of the year and Howard Robertson was named regional COY. Chase O'Sullivan was also named to the all-region team.

For the girls, Ashlee Pickerell was named the regional golfer of the year and Kevin Goin was named regional COY.

Congratulate these folks when you see them.

(By the way, Kristin Phillips, the daughter of our own Ken Phillips, was also named to the girls all-regional golf team.)

Another dominating performance by the Varsity. The four man total today was 309. Although four shots higher than Monday, Trysting Tree is much harder than Oak Knoll. More important than the win today was the round turned in by Chase O'Sullivan. Chase had been in a mini-slump but snapped out of it today and led the team with a season low tournament score of even par 72. Chase was backed up by Casey O'Sullivan with a 75, James Tuttle with a 79 and Jacob Bailey with an 83. Chris Antley playing in his first Varsity match of the year had a solid 87.

The Lady Titans won a three way match with North and South at Oak Knoll on Tuesday shooting a new school record 346!
Ashlee Pickerell lead the way with a 74 for medalist honors.
Alicia O'Sullivan shot a career best 86 to finish 3rd.
Paige Pittman shot a career low 93 and, so did Katie Baker to tie for 5th.
The JV also were also victorious with leaders Katlyn Trask 59 and Stephine Bartoll 60.

Another solid performance today from the Varsity and an above average performance from the JV.

The Varsity shot a season best 305 led by Casey O'Sullivan and Jacob Bailey who both shot 74 and James Tuttle with a 76. They defeated second place North by 44 shots.

The JV posted a season best 183 for nine holes led by Chris Antley with a 42 and Andrew Vander Weyden with a 45. They defeated the North and McKay JV's by 24 and 60 shots respectively.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame announced this morning that Alex Elder has been selected winner of the 2010 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for the state of Oregon. The award is based upon athletic achievement, academic record, leadership ability and community service. This is a tremendous honor for Alex, coach O'Dell and his coaching staff, and West Salem High School.

Yesterday (4-12) our varsity baseball team pulled out a huge win against Sprague. After falling behind 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning, our guys battled back by scoring one in the bottom of the sixth and four in the final inning to beat a tough Sprague team. Sophomore Evan Fowler pitched brilliantly for four innings and Colby Rice came through with a clutch double in the final inning. Aaron Sigmund ended the game with a RBI single. Yesterday's game was a total team effort and a credit to how hard our team has worked this season.

All around the Titans performed great yesterday in our meet vs. McKay as we swept the boys and girls team races. It was our first meet with decent weather so as expected we had many athletes attain seasons best. Kirsten Bachmen bettered her school record in the hurdles running 16.64. She also led a sweep of Titans in the 300IH along with Marina Watson and Anna Houck. Naoko Gille had a great meet winning the 100 (12.84), 200 (27.34), Triple Jump (34-1) and teaming with Bria Powell, Stacy Jackson and Ashley Plummer in winning the 4 x 100. Carley Davis won discus as well. Stephanie White was a double winner in the 1500m and 800m.

On the boys side. Miles Gorman continued running extremely well running 2nd in the 200m (23.04) and winning the 400 as well. He also teamed with Eli Manning, Kadin Rabago and Jeremy Smith to run a seasons and league best 43.74 in the 4 x 100. Alex Bradt also improved in the discus by 12ft throwing 142-6 for the win. His throw is also a league best

Frosh boys baseball won a nailbitter last night 7-6 at South....Dakota Oden came in as a relief pitcher in the bottom on the 7th with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs. First batter singled to load the bases, next hitter tried to squeze down third base line but popped it up and Tanner Ritchie made a great play at third base to catch the pop up then double off the runner going home from third- 2 outs!!! Oden walks the next hitter to load the bases again....hitter kept fouling off pitch after pitch.....finally Oden threw strike 3 to end the game. Total team win- Riley Newman threw 5 solid innings, great hitting from Riley Rediger, Avery Green, and Jacob Riddell. GREAT GAME all around.

West's own girls soccer coach - Tom Jaeger - has been named the 2009 US Youth Soccer Coach of the Year for Region IV.

With this very prestigious award, USYSA is honoring Tom as one of the top four girls' coaches in the nation! Tom is also a finalist for US Youth Soccer's NATIONAL Coach of the Year to be announced at the end of next month.

US Youth Soccer is the governing body for soccer in the United States, with over 3 million youth soccer players registered. It is divided into four regions: East, Midwest, South and Far West. This award names Tom as the top girls' coach of USYSA's Far West Region IV made up of 13 states, including Alaska, Arizona, Northern California, Southern California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Tom was selected for his outstanding contributions to youth soccer in the areas of player development, personal coaching development, sportsmanship, program success, dedication to the game, longevity to the program, and community involvement.

Lots of tears running down the faces of some very big and tough kids. Obviously our football players are disappointed. Winners, when they don't win, usually are. However, to be one of the final four teams is a pretty impressive accomplishment in itself. That thought will grow on people with time. Beyond that, our coaches and kids, present themselves in a manner that can make all of us proud they are Titans. They are an easy group to root for.

West Salem/Canby

Hi everyone!

The OSAA asked me to ask our fans a favor after we beat Jesuit (those are my words, not the OSAA's). I'm hoping you can spread the word for me.

West Salem and Canby are assigned the same seating sections. In the past there has been some conflict between the fans for the first game and the incoming fans for the second game. It results when fans from the first game desire to stay in the spectator section in which they have been seated (and they totally have that right, as all tickets are general admission) and that now is the cheering section for the incoming team. Understandably, the fans coming in would like to sit as a block, just as our fans would want to.

What I would ask of our fans is to be considerate of the Canby folks who love their team probably as much as we love ours. (Hard to imagine!) If Canby fans start to surround you, if you wouldn't mind moving so they could be together, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd hope they would do the same for us and am sure they would.

The chances of this being an issue for us are slim and none. However, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If we can avoid any conflict by just making folks aware, it would be awesome.

Rooter Bus/Tickets/Start Time

If you are interested in riding the rooter bus for parents and other adults, please contact Lori Norton or JoAnne Pfau at West.

The student rooter bus seats 56. With two chaperones, we have seating for 54 students. We need to have at least 30 to take the bus. The bus will leave West at 2:45 and return to West after the game - no muss, no fuss. Tickets for the student rooter bus can be purchased at the bookkeeper's window at West. We will make a "go/no go" determination by mid-day on Thursday. Come buy your tickets.

Pre-sale tickets will be on sale beginning Wednesday morning at the bookkeeper's window at West. These are OSAA ticket prices. Adults are $9.00. Students at $6.00.

Everyone knows by now but start time is 5:00 p.m. Our game will be followed by Sheldon/Canby.

Thank you to Lori Norton and all Titan fans. Last week I posted some concerns about noise makers. I also asked Lori to use her e-mail network to get word directly to our fans about both the noise makers and some concerns I had about "pop up" tents (hardly "four pages" of instructions"!!!). Lori helped tremendously.

The result: we had no problem with either issue. As an AD my worst fear is having to confront a loyal Titan supporter about an action at a game. Worse I don't want to referee disputes between loyal Titan supporters. With Lori's help we managed to avoid either of those.

Thanks again to Lori and to all loyal Titan fans for your understanding and willingness to help.

Noise Makers

Throughout this past football season we have had issues with noisemakers at our games.

It is expressley against the rules of both the CVC and the OSAA to use noisemakers during contests in any sport. This includes air horns, cow bells, thundersticks, etc., etc. Two items are allowed: the large megaphones designed for and used by cheerleaders only and the small individual-sized megaphones for use by fans.

If these are used during a game, it is entirely within the judgment of the officials as to whether the offending side is penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Please don't take a chance and potentially cost our team 15 yards. It's not worth it.

Football Playoffs

The Titans will open the football playoffs against the Roseburg Indians on Friday, 11/20 at 7:00 p.m.

The Indians beat Barlow in the first round.

As usual, parking will be at a premium. No parking on Landigard (sp?) Drive, as that is a private drive. Parking and entry in the back of the building is recommended, much easier on all counts.

Finally, OSAA ticket policies are in effect. $6.00 for adults/$4.00 for students as defined by the OSAA. No passes are accepted other than OACA "Gold Cards" and OSAA-issued passes.

My Apologies

I want to take a moment and publicly apologize for my omission of the volleyball program's season and all-CVC results from last night's Fall Sports Night. I have apologized to the coaches and folks who received awards last night but I also want to do so for those associated with our volleyball program but who weren't present.

There is no great explanation for my mistake. I have no idea why I didn't catch it. No excuses.

Here's what I would and should have said:

"The volleyball team completed another year in which they ended in the playoffs. This has become routine for the program under Coach Armstrong. We finished the CVC season with 7 wins and 5 losses and the #3 seed from the CVC. We eventually were eliminated by Gresham - the third year in a row - a perennial power in Oregon volleyball. Another great year for our volleyball program."

Congratulations - Girls Soccer

Our girls lost 2-0 to West Linn on Tuesday, ending their playoff run.

The girls had a fantastic season. They qualified for the playoffs, once again, as the #3 seed from the CVC. They then won their first playoff game vs. Wilson - the first girls soccer playoff victory in school history - 2 - 0.

The program has reached a level of excellence under of Coach Jaeger and this team just further reinforced that excellence.

Boys beat Canby 2-0 on Saturday and will play Grant at Delta Park on Tuesday.

Girls beat Wilson 4-0 on Saturday and will play West Linn at West Linn on Tuesday.

And speaking of weather, both boys and girls cross country wrapped up their seasons at the state championships in Eugene on Saturday in miserable weather conditions.

Our girls finished 14th. Grace Lin was our number one finisher.

Our boys finished 13th. JJ Campbell was our number one finisher.

Grace comes back next year for her senior year. JJ graduates. He has been a great leader for our team and will be missed.

Football wrapped up an undefeated league season with a dominating performance over McKay: 33-6 in the mud.

West has a bye in the first round of the state playoffs and will play at West on Friday, November 20th at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of this week's game between Southwest Conference #2 Roseburg and Mt. Hood Conference #5 Barlow.

OSAA Playoffs

Please be aware that entry to playoff games is governed by OSAA policy.

No passes other than coaches' Gold Cards OSAA-issued passes are accepted.

Entry fees are charged for ALL events. Sports for which the CVC does not normally charge - soccer for example - will require an admission charge.

The OSAA puts on tournaments or championships for all OSAA sponsored sports at all classifications at venues such as Lane Community College, Autzen and Reeser Stadiums, etc. Quite an endeavor and quite expensive. Ticket prices and policies are designed to cover the costs.

Schools are only reimbursed for expenses as designated by the OSAA. All ticket revenues from playoff games or championships are sent directly to the OSAA.

Basketball, both boys and girls, is a "cut" sport. Don't put yourself behind other athletes by not being eligible to participate on the first day of practice.

Athletic Study Program

By Salem-Keizer School District policy, any currently participating athlete at an S-K high school who receives an "F" or a grade point average below 2.0 in the previous 6-week grading period must be placed in a study program. This program at West entails those athletes reporting to a predetermined room with their lunch, during their lunch period, every day until dismissed from the program. This program is monitored by Mr. Sutherland - Athletic Director.

The program for grades reported during the past 6-week grading period will begin on Monday, 10/26/09. Athletes have been notified.

Students have 12 minutes from the end of the period prior to their lunch to report to the designated room. Again, they may bring their lunch. If a student/athlete is late, they will not be allowed to attend. This will be counted as an unexcused absence from the study program.

If an athlete is either unexcused absent from the study program or absent due to sickness, they will not be allowed to participate in any athletic activity for that day - practice or contest.

This program is designed to ensure that West athletes are students first. Athletics teaches the "life lessons" that support academics, they are not our primary purpose.

On Friday, October 30th we will honor our senior football players, band members, color guard, and cheer at the football game versus Redmond.

At our pep assembly for football earlier in the day on Friday we will take a moment to honor some of our athletes who perform in front of much smaller crowds but work just as hard and represent West just as well.

During the assembly we will honor seniors from our girls soccer, boys soccer, volleyball, and boys and girls cross country teams.

While parents won't be introduced at this event, they are welcome to attend.

Please be aware of the following spectator rules that will apply to athletic events. These are based on the newly outlined OSAA rules.

CENTRAL VALLEY CONFERENCE

The Central Valley Conference (CVC) member schools believe that athletics are an integral component of the comprehensive high school experience for their student athletes. As athletes they are expected to exude and demonstrate fair play, honor for their sport and their mutual adversary, and ethical behavior conducive to the highest standards of character.

While the Central Valley Conference holds these values as their core principles for their athletes, the league holds spectators, parents and visitors to their venues with a similar set of expectations, believing that those in the stands are as responsible as those on the court for the gamesmanship of the event.

Please join us in respecting and supporting our athletes by remaining positive at our events, and demonstrating good citizenship at all of our outings. Thank You!

The following spectator behaviors are considered inappropriate:

The use of artificial noisemakers , signs or posters
Turning backs, holding up newspapers or jeering at opponents during player introductions
Derogatory and/or unsportsmanlike comments directed at opposing game participants, fans, and/or officials
Vulgar/offensive, racially/culturally insensitive or abusive language
Throwing objects of any kind on the playing surface or in the stands
Showing disrespect or failing to cooperate with game supervisors
Group chants that are directed at the opposing team or officials
Violating school/OSAA dress codes while in attendance

CENTRAL VALLEY CONFERENCE

The CVC expects fans to fulfill their role as ethical spectators by following these guidelines:

Realizing that the main purpose of the contest is the play of the game and the fan’s role is one of support for the contestants.
Understanding that high school athletics warrant a different set of behaviors than those observed at the collegiate or professional level.
Enhancing the venue through the positive and respectful support of all contest participants and game management personnel.
Honoring the individual identities and contributions of each participant involved in the contest by avoiding derogatory remarks based on the person’s appearance, cultural, ethnic, socio-economic or ability characteristics.
Accepting that contest officials are professionally trained and neutral acting people committed to doing the best job possible in enforcing the game rules.
Acknowledging that cheerleaders, halftime performers and other distinguished guests should be treated similarly to contest participants.
Bringing sportsmanship concerns to an administrator from their school unless one is unavailable, at which time they may bring sportsmanship concerns to the attention of anyone supervising the venue.
Student spectators remaining in the bleachers and removed from the playing surface during the contest.
Demonstrating respect for the venue by treating the facility appropriately, and placing trash in its proper receptacle.
Remaining off of the playing surface until coaches and officials have conducted their post game functions.

I know I speak for Mr. John and the rest of our administration. We are very proud of our fans. We have fun at our games but not at the expense of other people. Let's follow the rules shown above and be the model for the rest of the CVC.

Basketball Schedules

I want to apologize for the inconvenience caused by the changes to our basketball schedules at such a late date.

When the athletic directors went to a "stacked" schedule for the 08-09 boys and girls seasons, we did so only for the purpose of the girls playing in front of more fans. Over the years we have been saddened by the lack of attendance our girls programs face. Our female basketball players play a good brand of basketball! What we had hoped through "stacking", and what had actually happened in the past, was that our girls would look up and actually see a larger crowd that might, subsequently, come to appreciate their efforts. Never do I remember any discussion of anything other than this purpose.

While we ran into issues that caused us to reevaluate our decision with regard to the schedules, be assured that what we originally attempted was with only the purest of intentions.

Endowment Basketball Games

West Salem High School's boys and girls basketball teams will be involved in OSAA "endowment games". "Endowment games" allow schools to play games in excess of the normal season limit. In exchange, schools send gate receipts to the OSAA for the purpose of funding the "OSAA Foundation".

The Titan boys will play endowment games on December 1st versus Skyview of Vancouver, Washington at West High and December 3rd versus Crescent Valley in Corvallis. The girls will play an endowment game against Beaverton High at West Salem on December 15th.

No passes or ASB cards are accepted for endowment games. Ticket prices are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students.

The goals of the OSAA Foundation are:
- to help ensure the future of educational high school activities in Oregon
- to maintain and enhance participation opportunities for the nearly 130,000 Oregon high school students involved in OSAA sanctioned activities annually
- to increase statewide awareness regarding the benefits of participation in educational high school activities.
